Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a deeply personal and transformative procedure that helps restore both form and confidence after breast cancer surgery. Whether performed immediately after mastectomy or as a delayed procedure, reconstruction is tailored to recreate a natural breast contour and help patients feel whole again.

Under the care of Johns Hopkins-trained Minneapolis plastic surgeon John Luck, MD, each breast reconstruction is approached with precision, compassion, and a commitment to preserving your natural anatomy. The goal is not only to rebuild the breasts but also to restore balance, femininity, and confidence with results that feel authentic to you. Dr. Luck performs breast reconstruction using tissue expanders and implant-based techniques to restore form to the breasts with results that look beautifully natural and complementary to your unique features.

What Reconstruction Options are Available for Breast Cancer Patients?

Following breast cancer removal surgery, there are generally three options available to recreate the breast mound:

  1. Breast Implants
  2. Fat, skin, and glandular tissue grafted from elsewhere on the body
  3. A combined approach utilizing both methods (hybrid reconstruction)

The majority of cases involve utilizing implants in a two-step process composed of tissue expansion and implant placement. Dr. Luck will help you determine the approach that best aligns with your goals, body type, and overall treatment plan. Nipple and areola reconstruction can also be performed as a final step to reclaim the natural shape and appearance of the breasts, sometimes followed by medical tattooing for a more realistic aesthetic.

Can I Get Implants If I Still Need Chemotherapy?

Undergoing chemotherapy doesn’t automatically prevent you from having breast implants. Dr. Luck coordinates your surgical timeline in close alignment with your oncology team and chemotherapy treatment plan to ensure the safest and most effective approach. In some cases, Dr. Luck will wait until chemotherapy is complete and your body has fully recovered to place your implants.

It’s normal for chemotherapy to temporarily affect the healing process, so incisions may take a bit longer to recover. Dr. Luck monitors your progress closely throughout treatment, prioritizing safety and long-term results at every step.

How Do I Know If I Need Breast Reconstruction?

The decision to undergo breast reconstruction is deeply personal. Some patients choose reconstruction immediately to restore symmetry and a sense of normalcy, while others prefer to delay or forgo it entirely. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You’ve had or are planning to have a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
  • You are in good overall health and have realistic expectations.
  • You wish to restore balance in your breasts or improve the way your clothes fit.

During your consultation, Dr. Luck will carefully review your medical history, anatomy, surgical goals, and treatment plan to help you make an informed decision that feels right for you.

What Can I Expect During Breast Reconstruction?

Why Do I Need Tissue Expanders?

Tissue expanders play a crucial role in preparing the chest for implant placement. After a mastectomy, the skin and muscle may be tight or flat, making it difficult to place an implant right away. This differs from cosmetic breast augmentation, wherein the skin and natural breast tissue are fully intact.

Expanders allow gradual stretching of the area, helping to safely create room for the final implant while maintaining the integrity of surrounding tissues. This step is temporary but essential for achieving the most balanced, natural-looking results.

How Long Does the Breast Reconstruction Process Last?

From the initial consultation to your final recovery, the entire process typically takes 9 to 12 months. The exact timeframe varies from patient to patient based on:

  • The procedure and technique(s) used
  • Body type
  • Personal preferences
  • Whether chemo, radiation, or other therapies/treatments are necessary
  • Whether nipple reconstruction is performed

Do I Have to Undergo Breast Reconstruction Immediately After Lumpectomy or Mastectomy?

Many patients elect to begin their breast reconstruction at the time of their mastectomy/lumpectomy. However, some individuals may need to delay the process due to medical or health concerns, a history of smoking, or the need to complete other therapies like chemotherapy or radiation. Immediate reconstruction offers the advantage of preserving breast skin and reducing the number of surgeries, while delayed reconstruction can allow for greater flexibility in timing. Dr. Luck will help you determine which approach best aligns with your medical and personal needs.

Is Breast Reconstruction Painful?

Some level of discomfort is expected during the breast reconstruction process, particularly in the early stages of healing. However, pain is typically well-managed with prescribed medication and supportive care. As the tissue expanders are gradually filled, you may experience a sense of pressure or tightness, but most patients find it mild and short-lived. Overall, the process is generally well-tolerated and many patients feel the temporary discomfort is a small step towards a rewarding, confidence-building result.
